Members in good standing in our congregation volunteer to read the Epistle during the Divine Liturgy. These are passages taken from the Old and New Testaments. The selected passages are read just before the priest reads the Holy Gospel. Both the Epistle and the Gospel readings are determined by the annual Ecclesiastical Calendar of the Orthodox Church and the same ones are read worldwide during holy services of that day. The role of a lay Epistle reader is a vital and an important part of the Divine Liturgy. The term liturgy means “work of the people.” All Orthodox men or women are invited to consider the role of Epistle reader.
